What to Expect at a Salon
You've got curly hair (so of course, you'be got questions.) We've got Paco Camp and he's got answers.
Paco camp has had his hands in the hair styles of Gloria Estefan, Hillary Clinton, Jon Secada, Andy Garcia an Ivana Trump Here's what he had to say when we caught up with him at Paco Camp.
  1. aveda: What is your philosophy on hair?
PC: Keep it simple. I want my clients to leave the salon with natural, beautiful, touchable hair that's easy to maintain and recreate at home. I want them to learn to love their hair's natural texture and quirks.
  2. aveda: If you could give women one piece of advice about their curly hair, what would it be?
PC: Women need to embrace their natural hair texture and understand that they can look beautiful whether their hair is straight, curly, wavy or whatever. Women tend to become fixated on whatever the media is portraying to be "in." Also, women need to learn how to work with their curly hair so that they can wear it well.
  3. aveda: What is your clients' biggest complaint about their curly hair?
PC: The number one complaint I get from my curly-haired clients is that they can't control their frizz. Be Curly™ Curl Control is great for helping eliminate frizz. On really humid days mix a little Light Elements™ Smoothing Fluid with Be Curly™ Curl Control for extra control.
  4. aveda: What is the biggest mistake women make with their curly hair?
PC: Women put way too much product in their hair, and they pile it straight on top of their heads. It ends up looking goopy and flat, not beautiful and touchable. Remember that less is more and even distribution is key.
  5. aveda: Should women with curly hair brush their hair?
PC: Once their hair is dry, absolutely not. It causes the hair to lose its shape and get frizzy. I recommend my clients give their hair a good brushing prior to taking a shower. Use an Aveda Paddle Brush with a little Beautifying Composition™ on your scalp, and start at the ends to untangle the hair and work the brush all over the scalp. It helps produce natural sebum, breaks down product, exfoliates the scalp and removes broken hair.
  6. aveda: You traveled on tour with Gloria Estefan for six years. What were some of her primary hair concerns?
PC: Having naturally curly hair, she wanted me to keep it from looking frizzy. She wanted her hair to look healthy and natural. She was always very open to change. I remember styling her once for the American Music Awards when she was hosting—I did four hair changes for that show. It's always great to work with someone who is willing to step outside the box and try something new.
  7. aveda: How important is it to use the right shampoo, conditioner and treatment products on curly hair?
PC: Very important. The majority of people use products that cause a lot of build-up on the hair. This keeps hair from receiving the full benefit of what they are using. It's important to use natural, plant-derived products like Aveda so hair is ready to receive the full benefits.
  8. aveda: What is sexy to you?
P.C. I think that sexy is an attitude. Look at Sonia Braga. She was always able to pull off wild, curly, frizzy hair and came across as one of Latin America's sexiest actresses. It really is an attitude. Women end up looking beautiful and sexy because they exude a confidence from within.
  9. aveda: Do curly-haired woman need to go to someone who specializes in cutting/styling their hair type?
PC: As a hairdresser with curly hair I have insight into how curly hair works. Curly/wavy hair has its own little nuances, behaves very differently than straight hair. You should absolutely go to someone who works on a lot of curly hair.
  10. aveda: What do you think is the next big trend we'll see in hair?
PC: That is such a hard question to answer. The one trend I can see happening in hair is women moving away from bleach and being blonde. I see woman continuing to go darker and more natural.
